If you’ve read some of our other blog posts, you’ll know that one of the main reasons why we chose our VIVEAU flavour varieties were first for their natural health benefits, and second for their delicious taste! Today, we’d like to share a bit of insight on the health and wellness benefits of tart cherries in the diet.

“Tart” or “sour” cherries may sound a little intimidating. They bring to mind a sort of mouth puckering taste, that may be a bit too intense to handle. However, tart cherries, when ripe, are both sweet and sour. The fruit is typically not eaten raw, like a sweet cherry would be, but often is dried or juiced before consuming. Some producers even turn dried tart cherries into a powder as a health supplement to be mixed into other foods or drinks.

In addition to the pleasant sweet/tart flavour of these cherries, the fruit also boasts many health benefits! Here are just a few of the many great things regular consumption of tart cherries can do for your body:

Provide anti inflammatory benefits

Some research has been done to demonstrate that tart cherry juice may help alleviate symptoms of inflammation from a few common ailments.

Can aid in muscle recovery after intensive exercise

Drinking tart cherry juice before or after exercise may help reduce muscle soreness afterwards. There are also some studies that have been done that indicate tart cherry juice may help speed up recovery after exercise as well!

Contains small amounts of melatonin, which can help act as a natural sleep aid

Though tart cherry juice contains small amounts of melatonin, studies have shown that even in these small quantities, consuming tart cherry juice can help to regulate the body’s sleep patterns, or improve the time taken to fall asleep at night.

Are a good source of anthocyanins, a powerful antioxidant

Anthocyanins are a natural compound that give fruits such as cherries and blueberries their rich colours. This compound, also known as a flavonoid, may also offer anti-inflammatory and anti-viral benefits.

We’re very lucky to have a local supplier of tart cherries right here in Nova Scotia for our VIVEAU. We hope you enjoy the crisp, refreshing taste of our tart cherries as much as we do!
